Mudhoney - Lawrence, KS 1998

This little review is being written more than 2 years after I saw the show, so no guarantees. Mudhoney has broken up, and my ears stopped ringing some time ago. However the memories of this lovely night are still with me…ah yes, and how sweet they are. Being the Kansan and belated grunge fan that I am, I never thought that I would get to see a ‘real’ grunge show, let alone a Mudhoney show.

Setlist: Suck You Dry, A Thousand Forms of Mind, Get Into Yours Here Comes Sickness, Real Low Vibe, Judgment, Rage, Retribution and Thyme, Sweet Young Thing Ain't Sweet No More, Touch Me I'm Sick, Try to Be Kind, I Have to Laugh,You Got It, Oblivion, Who You Drivin' Now?, I Will Fight No More Forever, Beneath the Valley of the Underdog, Encore: When Tomorrow Hits, F.D.K., In 'n' Out of Grace, Hate The Police

I’m not entirely sure that this setlist is correct. I stole it from a review at unofficial-mudhoney.com. I’m pretty sure I remember hearing Poisoned Water.

I couldn’t sit still through the opening sets...anticipation you know. The Creature Comforts were okay, but the poppy Lawrence sound I was so familiar with didn’t really help to psych me up for Mudhoney.

Drag Queen rocked a bit harder than the Creature Comforts and they were cool in a “oh Lord I hope that it’s almost time for Mudhoney sort of way”. Of course I stood around in front of the stage so I could be in front when Mudhoney started.

The place got very crowded as Mudhoney took the stage. This was about the only show in the midwest on the tour, so there were a few people who drove a very long way to see this show. I was right in front of Mark, so I had a pretty good feel for the intensity of the show and the band's comport. Of course the sound was very loud and with plent of feedback just like it should be. Mudhoney is exceptional at transferring energy to the crowd, and apparently they still had plenty of energy to transfer. I spent most of the night jumping around and pushing people off of me, but I managed to keep my front and center spot.

A few highlights of the night that I can recall included Matt using the mic stand as a machine gun and shooting the audience, Mark stepping on my fingers (oops), someone holding up a Queen Bitch sign and then Matt folding it in half, and some girl licking Matt’s bass. Oh yeah and my compatriot Jacob stole Mark’s Corona bottle after the show. I always thought Mudhoney drank black label beer, but I guess with fame they've moved up to imports.

The new songs fit in well right along with the old classics like Suck You Dry. I'm not going to try to analyze the setlist or say something cheesy about a career retrospective. After all, distortion, feedback, a wah-wah pedal, and lots of screaming are the perfect combination for a fun filled night at the tavern. There really isn't much to analyze.

The show was just entirely awesome and cannot be captured by mere words…lots of energy and craziness...a very commendable thing considering Matt was about ready to leave the band. Mudhoney did a great job of bringing fun, not just angst, to their rock show.
It was just awesome to hear Mudhoney in a small venue the way it should be. For a little while 1999 seemed so much like 1991, but you know how it is…tomorrow hits.
