Artist: Beck - Date: 11/12/02 - Location: Austin, TX

Setlist:
Lazy Flies, Canceled Check, Guess I'm Doin Fine, botched cover song, Sunday Sun, Release The Bats, Golden Age, Lord Only Knows, Tropicalia, Get Real Paid, Pay No Mind, It's All in Your Mind, We Live Again, Lonesome Tears, Loser, Little One, Lost Cause, Where It's At - Encore: Paper Tiger, Nicotine & Gravy, Devil's Haircut

I nabbed this show off of Furthurnet, and was rewarded for my patience in waiting for it to download when I converted those glorious .shns to .wav. The sound quality is great. There is a little echo, which can makes the sound a little muddy on speakers, but the echo doesn't seem to be as noticeable on headphones. Crowd noise is pretty average, and not distracting. In addition to the sound, the set is what really does it for me. Beck starts out in kind of moody and subdued mode playing the quieter songs off albums like Mutations and Sea Change. Then he turns it up a notch to the more traditional Beck sound for Lord Only Knows and the following songs. Even during the more up tempo songs, Beck seems a little subdued than what I'd expect (although I haven't heard too many of the more recent shows). He still gives a great performance interjecting his trademark wit between songs and during his botched cover song and Release the Bats.

The Sea Change era is certainly an evolution for Beck. Like any other band with a career longer than a couple albums, you tend to get rather polar sets. The new stuff is on a totally different plain than the old stuff, but you have to play the old stuff to keep the crowd happy. You'll hear a guy yelling for Devil's Haircut several times throughout the show...patience dude, Beck will not let you down. Personally, I really dig the new stuff, probably more so than the old stuff. Guess I'm Doin Find, It's All in Your Mind and Lonesome Tears, which is just mesmerizing, really sell this recording for me...I could listen to them again and again.

How I would rate this album (F-A+):

Sound Quality - A
Setlist - A
Performance - A
Overall Score - A
